The Canadian Canoe Museum is North America's only canoe museum. With more than 600 canoes and kayaks and 1,000 related artifacts, The Museum's collection is the largest of its kind. Tour the Museum's collection, explore the nine feature exhibits and visit the Museum's Gift Store. Visitors should allow themselves one to two hours to complete a self-guided tour. As the Museum is located in Peterborough, you can combine a visit to the Museum with a visit to other Peterborough attractions.
Journey back to the 19th century at Lang Pioneer Village, featuring heritage buildings and gardens, farmyard animals and green open spaces. Watch a tinsmith, carpenter and blacksmith ply their trades, visit the General Store, watch wheat ground into flour at the Grist Mill, view live demonstrations in the Village print shop, and much more.
The Peterborough Lift Lock is the world's highest hydraulic lift lock and one of Canada's historic sites. The Lift Lock was built between 1896 and 1904, in an era when the strength of men, horse and steam power was shaping the transportation system of a growing nation. The Lift Lock is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway system and is still in regular use.
Ontario's Petroglyphs Provincial Park is one of the most intriguing and evocative archeological treasures in Canada. This historical park draws visitors from far and near to view the sacred rock carvings from which it takes its name. The park contains the largest concentration of aboriginal rock carvings in North America: 900 petroglyphs depicting turtles, snakes, birds and humans.
At the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area, you can explore underground caverns and pathways carved by a ancient glacial river comparable in size to the Niagara River. The area surrounding the caves is rich in vegetation and ideal for hiking. The sand beach and shallow Indian River provide a safe swimming area for children. The picnic shelter, with central barbecue and picnic tables, is an ideal facility for family and group gatherings.
Experience the traditions of the past reflected in the present at Whetung Ojibwa Centre. Located on the Curve Lake Indian Reserve, the Centre offers a spectacular collection of Indian crafts as well as fine art, sculpture, masks, leather work, clothing, jewelry, music and books from across Canada and locally.
